It seems possible (or even likely) that frames are scheduled for grok but never return. Perhaps the GrokJ2KEncoderThread needs some means to check for frames that never made it back, to _encoder.retry() them without allowing the grok code to push a frame to the writer if it ever turns up later.

Maybe the way the Grok code calls _writer direct should be fixed first, and then fixing this bug might be easier.
