4K DCP - Burning Subtitles

Post by Guddu »

I have a 4K unencrypted DCP that I will need to re-encode as I need to burn subtitles to it. Is there any known issue in DOM when it comes to 4K content? Is it ok to generate a 4K DCP or shall i bring it down to 2K just to be safe? Anything else I should be careful about for this conversion?

Appreciate your guidance.

You should be fine doing this. I suggest you do a short passage using Trimming and see how it comes out in the player.

When burning in subs into an existing DCP or MXF, DCP-o-matic checks which frames will actually have subs added, and will only recompress those frames with actual changes. For a 4k feature, I suggest you set the compression data rate as high as possible (my suggestion would be 200-240MBit/s).
That also means - if you go from a 4k feature to a 2k DCP - ALL frames will be recompressed.
