Thank You

Hello everyone

I am writing to express my sincere gratitude for not only the dcp-o-matic suite of software, but also to those who have contributed to the forum. A couple of days ago I created my first DCP for my feature and took it to a local cinema to test it. Everything was perfect. The software was robust, the forum posts informative.

I have a question, too. If I wanted to repay the project by doing some development, where should I begin? I have around 30 years experience in software engineering; from architecture and design, through to hacking code. I'd be prepared to chip in if someone pointed me in the right direction.

All the best

Jim

Best a question for Carl to answer, but I'd really like to see GPU encoding come to dcpomatic. The cost of building a machine to do serious encoding would come way down if GPU power was able to do the heavy lifting. Could be wrong but I think Wraptor does this already.

Hi Jim,

I'm glad it worked for you, and I echo your thanks to everybody who contributes to the forum!

Contributions to development would be very welcome. There's a few ways you could join in:
  • Pick a bug or feature request from the bug tracker and work on it. The bugs/features marked with priority "immediate" are the ones I'm hoping to include in the next "stable" release, 2.16.0.
  • Work on something that "scratches an itch" that you found when using the software!
  • Work on something "bigger": as an example, if you are experienced with JPEG2000 and/or CUDA/Metal/OpenCL a long-standing wish is for some GPU-acceleration of decoding/encoding. You don't have to start from scratch with this, as a fair amount of work has already been done - get in touch if you are interested and I will go through it!
If you have queries about anything development related I am always happy to receive emails on carl@dcpomatic.com.

All being well there will be a paid-for option to allow this before too long (using some closed-source libraries). An open-source solution would be even better, though! :)

Thank you all.

I'll start by squashing a few bugs. It's been a while and that's a good place to start. Right back where I started the software career - fixing bugs for Philips telephone systems. It won't be long, hopefully, before I can start adding something else.

All the best

Jim

Haha, maybe I can attack you with some suggestions that Carl, ehm,... so far wasn't too keen to pick up... ;-)
(Probably because they were too simple for him to even consider them)

finger exercises so to say...

Too many bugs, not enough time! :)
