Help wanted with testing on M1 (Apple Silicon) Mac

Post by carl »

Hi all,

There is a build of DCP-o-matic here which should hopefully run in "native" (ARM) mode on the new M1 macs.

I would be interested to hear if it even runs on a M1 mac, and if it does, whether it's definitely running the ARM binary (not using rosetta); it looks like you can tell this by doing something like described here.

I haven't tested this on a M1 mac so it's a bit of a long shot, but I'd be very grateful for any feedback.

Hi Carl,

I just tried 2.15.120 on my new M1 Mac Mini (16GB ram, 512 GB flash).
It seems to run fine and it's definitely running the ARM binary.
Only did a short test (making DCP of 2 minute 2k scope trailer) and got 9.4 fps.
Looks good!

I was a bit puzzled by the low memory usage (something like 350 MB,
is 1-2 GB on Linux if I remember correctly), but maybe looking at the
wrong numbers (not experienced apple user).

Hi rob,

That's fantastic news! Thank you for taking the time to test it!

It would be great if you could run the Sintel benchmark, if you get a moment - that would make it easier to compare M1 performance against other CPUs.

Best,
Carl

Hi all,

I already sent Carl my benchmark results, but for the readers here:
the Mac mini M1 does over 11 fps with the native ARM code (DOM 2.15.120)
Looks good!

PS Carl: the link you posted points to an (older) RC version atm: v2.15.115
That one probably does not have native ARM code!

Hi all,

I am new to the forum. Been using DCP-o-matic for quite some time now, and now I have a M1 Mini and wanted to see if I could run DOM on it.

So, I just downloaded the test DOM 2.15.134, but unfortunately it immediately crashes after opening, giving me a 'quit unexpectedly' message. Since the upload appears to be from yesterday, I figured I'd report here.

Hi Stern, that's a shame, thanks for letting us know. Can you click "Report..." in the "quit unexpectedly" dialogue and then copy/paste the problem report into an email to carl@dcpomatic.com ?

I mean the report that looks like this one

Hopefully this crash should be gone in 2.15.135 - let me know if not! And thanks for the report!
