Very first Project

Post by hefterl »

Hi, i did my first DCP from a final cut full hd m4v file. this is round 6,5 gb size, a documentation with 85 minutes.
the DCP folder has 193 gb! and played even on my fast iMac Pro with a lot of dropped frames.
is this ok?
there are also in the folder two files with the same size 94gb... hmm

with vlc played smooth, but without audio.

I want to prevent to bring it to the cinema and something is terrible wrong.
as I said, my very first dcp.

greetings and thank you in advance.

Ernst
this is the folder with the two big files, ok???

Sounds OK but make sure you understand what is the DCP and what is DCP-o-matic's working files. Your DCP is the Daheim_FTR-1-25_F..._SMPTE_OV folder.

Hi Ernst - the dropped frames in DCP-o-matic player on Macs is a player problem. You may improve the situation a bit to gain confidence by choosing 'decode at quarter resolution' and making the playback window smaller. Most likely, your DCP is 100% okay.

Only transfer that single folder 'Daheim_FTR-1-25...' to the cinema, as Carl wrote, ignore the video folder and all other files.

thank you very much, the guy in the cinema told me the same, now he tries to import in his system, dis formatted in extFS, so his linux machine should read this..
the movie is stereo, but I activated all other channels, I have read that this should be better for room sound in the cinema.. hoping....

Carsten, one more question, I can export in Final cut as nativ the file is round 80 gb size, or (I did 1920 Full hd Apple)
does ist do a difference or is it better to export in full resolution"Original File (Standart) (the movie is anyway just full hd)

Hmm, what do you mean by saying 'I activated all other channels'. If you created a 5.1 DCP with just the L and R channels populated with audio, that is okay. If you sent the L/R audio to all other channels as well, that will be a nightmare...

See attached screenshots of the audio matrix for both options.

Of, course, best for cinema is to create a real Left/Center(Dialog)/Right mix, but if that isn't possible, plain stereo is okay. Depending on your audio mix, it may work nicely to use DCP-o-matic 's LCR Upmixer. You should still use the 5.1 channel layout, even if only populating L/C/R with audio.
For stereo, a 2-channel DCP is okay.

I think you should always create a master file in native resolution - that is, if your sources are 1920/1080, then create a 1920/1080 pixel master file.
All adjustment to cinema format can and should be done in dcp-o-matic. e.g. for a 'flat' DCP (best suited for a 1920/1080 master), DCP-o-matic will automatically fill the sides with black to 1998/1080.

Carsten thank you, you saved me one mistaken version.
Do you think it is possible to watch with teamviewer the my dcp work, I think it is a fast task for you, not special just one file, and a unforgettable help for me. Tomorrow after 20:00?

Tomorrow evening I'll be at the cinema.

Can you send your metadata file (project settings in your project folder)? Just attach it as an upload to this thread.

With typical HD 1920/1080 content, DCP-o-matic does most things right automatically. With a standard installation, all settings are set by default so that a fully valid DCP is created. If you played with some defaults, you may reset your prefs to defaults first.

Carsten, for the sound mix from stereo do you think it is OK to put some of the sound thru the center?

The centers are set at -12dB
Thanks in advance
