Containers

Post by Gordon McLeod »

I notice that now there are only 2 options for containers flat and scope
Ideally a full container is desirable especially for making test targets
Also a F220 and F200 are needed now days since several studios are using them extensively

Containers and interior aspect ratios are two separate things - for an F-200 or F-220 DCP, one would use a flat container and use content that is either already cropped to 2:1 or 2.2:1, or you can crop it with DCP-o-matic's video settings. It's then padded with black to fill the container. Works the same for scope containers.

The C Container can be enabled in advanced prefs - it is not a good idea to use it for normal live content, so, we found it better to not offer it by default.
Apparently, some people used the full container just because they preferred to have the highest possible resolution. Then came complaints that their precious content was cropped in theaters.

Formally, only straight scope or flat containers in 2k or 4k are 'allowed' by current specs. All other aspect ratios need to be created by cropping and/or padding into these two containers.
