Serious audio problem when playing back a DCP.

Post by cintoli »

I am referring again to the DCP called IlVentoSoffia_FTR-1-Pre-25_F_IT-en_001-UNRATED_51_2K_20230605_CNT_SMPTE_OV we talked about earlier.

I made sure the print master has a 5.1 audio mix and in the project timeline the sound worked perfectly. I did not made any change in the sound output when rendering the DCP.

Once I finished rendering the DCP and played it with DCP-o-Matic player, I was really puzzled to notice that the sound is completely distorted, especially in terms of pitch. It is in sync, but the voices have a very deep pitch (like in old 33 RPM records played at 16 RPM) and the music and effects are virtually non-existent.

And the check tool reveals no errors at all.

The even funnier thing is that instead of 16 audio channels as it should lately, DCP-o-Matic only rendered 6.

What happened according to you? And how can I fix this problem without having to re-render everything for 16 hours? And if I had to (which would be an inconvenience but never mind), what audio settings should I check?

Both DCP-o-Matic and DCP-o-Matic player are version 2.16.58.

Thanks,

Alessandro

Can you attach the "log" file from inside your project, or email it to carl@dcpomatic.com ?

Apparently I cannot attach the log here because I get an invalid extension error, so I am going to e-mail it.

The 6/16 channel confusion is probably because in 2.16.58 the player displays mapped (i.e. active) channels to try and avoid people wondering why their DCPs suddenly have 16 channels.

OK, 6 active channels they are :-)

How about the pitch problem? Does the log offer any hint?

Oh dear - I can reproduce the problem here. It looks like something wrong with the player.

I think you will find that if you go back to 2.16.56 the player will work again (but once again report 16 channels in the DCP). I think your DCP is fine.

Oh that's great! I will download the previous version of the player then.

I am glad I could help you find a bug!

I would like to confirm that version 2.16.56 of the player does not have the issue I described.

I hope that the next player release will fix it.

Yes there should be a fix ready within the next 12 hours or so.
