Extract a SRT from a VF

Post by rosanamadalina »

Hi everyone,

I was wondering if it was possible to extract a SRT file from a VF of a DCP.
It would be very helpful, as I could then pass over that file to the translating team, instead of exporting a screener from which they'd still have to set the timecodes.

Thanks!

If the DCP consists of only one reel, you can often use the existing XML as is, and then convert it to SRT in an external program, eg SubtitleEdit.

For multi-reel DCPs, there is an open feature request: https://dcpomatic.com/mantis/view.php?id=2595

You should also be able to create a new DCP from a VF (if the VF is unencrypted). If you set DCP parameters right, you could e.g. convert a multi-reel SMPTE VF to a single reel Interop DCP, and then just use the resulting xml subtitle file.

IF the OV/VF DCP is already in Interop format, it could be even easier. Interop subtitles are plain xml files, while SMPTE subtitles are wrapped into MXF. Not a show stopper, but not immediately readable.

SMPTE can also put MXF into SubtitleEdit to export any format you want, including srt, xml and so on.
