DCP Job Fails Without Error Message

Post by Joe.G »

When I run a DCP job, DCP-O-Matic fails.

Before I begin a DCP job, I reboot the computer. There is no network connectivity, and no other applications are running.

The job begins and runs. I takes a long time so I leave the computer running.

At some point I return and DCP-O-Matic closes. No error message is displayed.

There's a partially rendered DCP that won't play, so the assumption is that the application crashed during the job.

The DCP-O-Matic version number is: 2.16.72.

Is there an error log I can look at to troubleshoot?

Any suggestions would be helpful.

Thanks for looking!

There is a file called log inside the project folder. Is this Mac or windows?

Does this happen every time you run the same job? (It should go quicker after the first time).

The failure occurred two or three times with the exact same job.

I tried something different today as a troubleshooting test.

The DCP title had an ampersand "&" character.

I removed the "&" from the title during the next job and the job finished successfully.

Has there been any reports about use of unusual characters causing errors?

I'll continue testing and report any new findings.

Never use special chars in DCP titles and transport folders/media path names. DCP-o-matic should catch it normally, but still, don't push it.

I haven't heard of problems with & (and I just tried it quickly and it seemed OK).

Sadly DCP-o-matic's crash logging on Windows is quite poor, but if you have time we can try adding some tools to find out more about the crash. Would you be able to do a debugging session over Zoom (or similar)?

Hi Carl,

If you can send me a link to the tools and the installation instructions, we can do some testing.

Thanks!

Great! First I'd like to try "Dr. MinGW", for which I think you need to follow these steps:
  • Download the software.
  • Unpack it somewhere.
  • Open a command window with administrator privileges and go into the unpacked folder.
  • Type drmingw -i to install.
Then crash DCP-o-matic again and see if Dr. MinGW pops up a window with information - if it works I'd like to see that window. Let me know if you'd rather to this over zoom or something.
