OCAP VF

Post by rockonrush »

I have to submit a DCP with CCAP in the OV, and then OCAP in a VF.

Full disclosure, I made my OV and VF in Transkoder. I wrapped the CCAP easily enough, but honestly I'm not sure if I created the OCAP properly or not. I'll provide the steps I used below

1. Setup OV timeline. Included a CC track and put my SRT onto it. Exported an OV with CCAP wrapped.
2. Opened the OV CPL. Added a text track (not a CC track) and put another set of the SRT onto it.
3. Exported a VF and changed the name to OCAP.
Screenshot of my OV and VF at the bottom of post.

It seems odd to me that the VF has both the new subtitle track (labelled as "en_sub.mxf) and the previous ccap (labelled en_cc.mxf)

I'd like to either confirm the VF I made originally is alright, or I'd like to use my OV and create a new VF in dcp-o-matic.

Thanks.

One would probably have to look at the Metadata to find out what actually IS in the DCP. You could also try playing it in DCP-o-matic player it will show OCAP, and CCAP in the CCAP monitor.

When you import your CCAP OV into DCP-o-matic in order to make an OCAP VF from it, the CCAP should be disabled by default, so, if you then add the OCAP files, the resulting VF should NOT contain the CCAP track from the OV.

Hey Carsen,
thank you for your reply. I had some free time to pop this into our screening room at our facility.

The OV played fine. And when I loaded the VF labelled as OCAP I had good looking captions/text on screen. I wasn't even aware my projector was capable of it, but this seems like a good sign.

I actually just made a new VF though. I loaded the OV, deleted the CC track, put in a new text track (again, not a new CC track) and created a VF. The new VF only has one MXF item now, rather than 2. Which seems good to me.

As for the CPL metadata that you mentioned, the festival had some specific notes.
For OCAP they want "MainSubtitle" in the CPL.
For CCAP they want "MainClosedCaptionˮ in the CPL.

Here's the CPL from the VF for OCAP:
<MainSubtitle>
<Id>urn:uuid:78e677c1-9ed2-4966-b596-37c9039d4753</Id>
<AnnotationText>omited_FTR_F_EN-EN_OCAP_US-NR_51_4K_ST_20250110_COL_SMPTE_VF_01_en_sub.mxf</AnnotationText>

This looks good to me.

Here's the CPL for CCAP.
</MainSound>
<cc-cpl:ClosedCaption xmlns:cc-cpl="http://www.smpte-ra.org/schemas/429-12/2008/TT">
<Id>urn:uuid:d0439068-b67d-4c3c-82e4-17cec1b62d2d</Id>
<AnnotationText>omited_FTR_F_EN-EN-CCAP_US-NR_51_4K_ST_20250109_COL_SMPTE_OV_01_en_cc.mxf</AnnotationText>

<Hash>dwnSVXg8wM122fREvHBLnXSTaoQ=</Hash>
<cc-cpl:Language>en</cc-cpl:Language>
</cc-cpl:ClosedCaption>

I don't see anything that says "MainClosedCaption" anywhere in the CPL. I'm not convinced this is an issue though, since when I open the OV I can clearly see the CC track.

Hi !
The mention "MainClosedCaption" is not in the cpl but in the xml file (in the <DisplayType> node) contained in the subtitle mxf file.
The DoM CPLs are very well formatted.

MainClosedCaption does seem to be the Interop CPL tag name for the closed caption asset. AFAICS they changed it to ClosedCaption for the SMPTE version.
