Simon - while it would certainly be 'nice' if burn-in and timed text would appear 100% the same in DCP-o-matic player - you need to understand that DCP-o-matic player is not a reference for timed-text rendering. Every projector/server is rendering timed-text with it's own unique software, there is no pixel-identical reference code for this. So, the shadow spacing will be different for every type of DCI projector or server (depending on which part of the projection chain is rendering the text). Same for italics or other supported timed-text effect.
Also, closed captions are not intended for being rendered on screen, and any text-effect is ignored by closed caption display devices.
