DNxHD, Prores or Uncopmressed

Post by funkytwig »

Hi, this was touched on in another post (viewtopic.php?f=2&t=97) but wanted to start its own thread.

Is uncompressed actually going to give better results to DNxHD (10bit). This is for a feature so quality is very important.

Does it depend of source material. i.e. it may be the case that for Arri/RED it is worth it but for everything else it is not.

Ben

PS it would be the free DNxHD format.

ARRI/RED normally use compressed video, even for high end productions, so, in general choosing a compressed format does not mean a visible compromise.

Most people prefer uncompressed only for the post-production phase, because a lot of exchange, processing, compositing, etc. takes place and using a lossy codec would imply a lot of repeated decoding and recompressing, hence accumulated losses. Once post is finished, I guess it is okay to use a good compressed format for the final version. Depends a bit also wether you are only considering this as an intermediate format for the DCP conversion, or if it will be your final master for all future use.

consider what is the last step of your postproduction process.
what format was this rendered in? If your last output is DNXHD for broadcast for example,
multiplying the files will not give you more quality.
It depends very much on your whole workflow from the beginning to the end.
