I just spotted these opensource libraries, being good devs you have probably seen them too, but just in case...

This one hints at a 280 times speed increase over openJPEG using NVIDIA CUDA, windows and linux.
And another one spotted here...

Maybe one could be wrapped in an openJPEG interface, for people who do have a NVIDIA GPU?
