Re: .ASS subtitles (ASS TEST)

Post by Ron »

I did a .ASS format test with a blank black video as follows:
- Bottom aligned Helvetica Neue 60pt
- Bottom aligned Helvetica Neue 30pt
- Bottom aligned Helvetica Neue 120pt
- Top aligned Helvetica Neue 60pt
- Center aligned Helvetica Neue 60pt

DCP-o-matic display:
> The bottom aligned subtitles displayed at bottom but fonts looked either too large or not small enough.
> The top aligned subtitled displayed on the center of the screen. Font looked too large
> The center aligned subtitle displayed at the top with the first and second line overlaping.

Carl: I will be email you the ASS file

Aegisub 3.2.2 - 1920x1080
OSX 10.15.7

These are screenshots of Aegisub screen of how the subtitles should look.

I just made a test using the same .ASS file to burn the subtitles using Handbrake.
The subtitles were burnt correctly as shown on the previously taken screenshots above from Aegisub.

It's a very small video of less than 1MB but apparently I can't upload it here.

It would be great if you could try the version from here as that contains a few subtitle fixes.

Ok... great!

I'm on MacOSX 10.15.7...
Do I DL the top one only? (is the second on the list the player?)

Hi carl....

I ran a test with a new ASS file and here are my initial observations:
- Positioning is pretty close except for the center middle seems to be higher than the original
- Top aligned subtitles seem closer to the edge than bottom subtitles (both have 100pt margin)
- Helvetica Neue 60pt subtitles seem a little larger and display plain Helvetica
- I formatted various fonts individually and are listed on DoM's font box but are not displayed as different fonts.

(I can send you the ASS file that I used for the test if you'd like)
