Question regarding audio tracks

Post by billy »

Hello!
I have been told by our less than motivated tech that we cannot play a DVD show on our DCP2000 without paying a zillion dollars. So, I've done a bit of searching on my own and found this, which seems to be a solution. However, I've never converted to a DCI compliant format. During this process with DCPomatic, where will I select which audio track to use? There are two different languages, of which I will need to have both available.
Thank you for your help.

One solution to projecting DVDs is to play them straight off the disc via a scaler (e.g. Christie Cine-IPM, or similar), but assuming you want to go down the DCP route then DCP-o-matic can help. Bear in mind that, no matter how you do it, a DVD is never going to look too good as the resolution is low and the compression is quite extreme.

As regards the audio: you can only have one track on a single DCP (or strictly, on a single CPL). So you would need to make two, one for each of your sound tracks. If you rip your DVD using the right software (e.g. MakeMKV or AnyDVD) you can then choose your soundtrack from DCP-o-matic's "Audio" tab using the audio map (see here in the manual).

It is possible to create two DCPs with different soundtracks which share the picture information (see here) but that is a little more complex so you may want to keep it simple at first and create two independent DCPs.

Let us know here if you need any help.

Thank you for the fast response Carl!
The DVD is the only source we have for this movie (there is no protection on it), so I will try what you suggested in ripping it and then encoding two different videos.
I was trying to rip it directly with DCPomatic, which I can see why I couldn't figure out how to select the audio!
I will come back to let you know how it goes!
Have a great day!

It may indeed be possible to encode directly from a DVDs VIDEO_TS folder if the DVD is unencrypted. I think, however, you should still rip the content with a dedicated software before processing it with DCP-o-matic. At least for a beginner, it is easier to start with a contiguous file. The DVD filestructure is more complicated than most people think, and while DCP-o-matic now has options to deal with this, they are not well visible to the beginner.

Try e.g. MakeMKV, or any other well known DVD-Ripper.

Your tech saying that playing a DVD would need a lot of money to invest beforehand maybe a lazy evasion - but it could in fact be true just as well - there are series I projectors without HDCP, and since most modern DVD and BluRay players need HDCP over it's HDMI port to be supported for playout, it could indeed cost thousands of dollars to retrofit the old projector with a HDCP capable board or a scaler.

Do you know what type of projector you have? The 'DCP2000' you mention is a Doremi server, that wouldn't play DVDs under no circumstances. However, there is an old series I projector from Barco - the DP-2000, that lacks HDCP capability, if not retrofitted with an expensive upgrade board. And I am not sure wether that board is still available at all.

Hey!
Just wanted to update you on the progress. Looks like I'm getting the hang of this. Ripping the DVD first and then DCPing it worked well. I've also made a few slideshows on my computer and tested them out.
The only thing I still need to work on is the audio. It was a stereo program and I used the surround simulation in DCP-o-matic but it didn't seem to project the sound on the same channels as the regular 5.1 Doremi shows. Maybe the numbering is different? I'll have to do some investigating!
