So, will the new stable release be 2.18 or 2.17?

I was planning to make 2.17.x test versions, and then make 2.18.0 later.

2.17.x has this big timing change, and hopefully it will have sign language support soon (ish).

... but in the mean time 2.16.x versions will have (hopefully) lower risk stuff.
