FYI: KDM expiration date limitation in server.

Post by Aswippe Johnson »

Looks like I hit a ceiling on a GDC IMB. KDM period was set for 10 years, and the GDC said:

KDM is limited by certificate.

I shortened the period to two years and it was fine. So, I guess GDC doesn't expect (or want) their servers/IMBs to last that long? Planned obsolescence? (In case you're wondering why a 10-year KDM... it's to protect purchased content.)

In another forum, I recently learned that some Qube servers already had expired certificates and Qube said they wouldn't be able to extend beyond next year...

That should be criminal. Time for the theatres to band together with a huge anti-trust lawsuit.

Hmm, interesting - I tried this on our Barco ICMP - a validity window of 1 week worked, when I tried from 2016 to 2026, the KDM was ingested okay and displayed as okay, but when I tried to play the CPL, I received this error:

Methinks we've uncovered something here. I posted about this in another forum, and someone mentioned they remembered a KDM issued for a feature in 2012 with an expiration date of 2026, and it was fine. It was on a Dolby server.

Be interesting to see how other servers behave...

Maybe this is happening because of the expiration date of the certificates on servers? If KDM expiration date is later than certificate expiration date then KDM is rejected I think.

That's exactly why. It's not DoM.

Wondering how decides about certificate validity of servers? Is there a technical/security/standards driven expiration date, or is it up to the manufacturer to decide?
