Summary0000054: Name video.mxf / audio.mxf differently
Description

Hello,
I've just found out DVD_O_MATIC and whaooo! Really incredible work!

Just one thing or two to add after telling "congratulations"...

All DCPs produced have video and audio files named : "video.mxf" and "audio.mxf"..
I know machines are ok with that but human beeings sometimes could have problems! could it be possible to give audio and video files specific and uniques names for each DCP?

Then, another feature that would be great : could it be possible to have more options about frame rate : turning 25 ips to 24 for example.. I know it must be difficult... because of the way to do that (changind sound time, etc...) but it could be great.

Last thing, could you also let people know and choose what kind of DCP are produced: MXF interop or SMPTE?

Thank you again for your great job.

Thierry.

and one question : about frame rate: what happens when your video source is 23.976 fps, for example? DCP out is obviously 24 fps but how DVD_O_MATIC makes this change? (sound time is changed? video frame rate is a little different by increasing speed?)
Those questions are important enough to be precised, don't you think so?

And one another thing (Yes, I speak too much) Will the next version handle the new FFMPEG version? Indeed, this new FFMPEG is OK with new video formats just like APPLE PRORES 4.2.2 and it could it great to use even more sources.

Hi thejhi,

Thanks for getting in touch.

  1. What sort of name are you thinking of for the MXFs? Just a unique ID?
  2. I added some information about frame rates here (and interop/SMPTE): http://carlh.net/software/dvdomatic/faq.php
  3. What approach do you want to see for converting 25fps to 24fps?

Regards

Carl

Hello Carl.
Thank you again.

for question 1:
Yes, why not a unique ID for video / audio mxf files? Or may be name of DCP included in the files names. (It could also be a mix).

for questions 2 and 3:
Whaou !; I followed the links you posted and didn't read that before my post, otherwise I wouldn't have asked my questions, sorry.
I Think DVD O MATIC already works as I usally try to work when I have to manually convert a frame rate. Great.

Actually, my question about 25 to 24 had sense only because I usually produced MXF interop DCPs and for compatibility reasons, Those DCPs HAD to be in 24fps.
In this case, I used to change lasting time of the source, too. I think it's the best solution to keep movements quality in video. I used to change sound lasting time too in audacity for example, without changing height. So the results were generally very good.
Just like I told you, I used to make it because of MXF interop format. But as I can see in your FAQ, too, DVD O MATIC produces only SMPTE DCP ! This way, 25 FPS can be kept without problem (even if some exotic servers keeps on having dificulties to handle this framerate and EVEN if owners of this servers tell me that they have been upgraded to be totally SMPTE compliant)... but it is another question...

Thank you again for time spending and great job, really. And sorry for my poor english.

Thierry.

2/3 --- the information wasn't there until you asked about it, so that's why you couldn't find it ;)

It wouldn't be too hard to run 25fps video at 24fps... does that really look ok? As you say, it shouldn't be needed too often as I think most servers can now play 25fps.

Cheers

Carl

Yes It really looks ok ! thanks. A "force 24 fps, by changing lasting time" option should be enough in almost case. But , as you say, it will less and less be needed.

And I've also noticed your answer for BMP and TIFF issue. great !

Have a good evening or a good day (I don't know in what part of this little planet you are!)

OK, I'll add a separate feature request for that.

I missed your comment about FFmpeg. DVD-o-matic is already built with a fairly recent FFmpeg version; which version is it that has better support for Prores? I have used DVD-o-matic with a couple of prores files and it seemed to work ok.

I am in the UK, so evening it is!

Actually, I used ffmpeg 1.1.1 simply. It was released on january 7th. May be DVD O MATIC already use it. I just know that I had to make a DCP from a recent Prores 4.2.2 source this year and I was not able to extract correctly tiff images from that till I downloaded this last version of ffmpeg. I usally used Oen DCP in command line (for multiple reel DCP) to do that.

Here, in France, it must be evening too, if only I looked through the windows sometimes !

Regards.

Thierry.
