Summary0000064: Hello. Great but could handle prores even better
Description

Hello Carl.
I' ve just tried your last release, both on ubuntu and windows.
It's great and better and better.

Creating MXF without going through Jp2K files repertory is really great.

I've just tested it with several video files and they almost work...

... except files provided in prores 4444. (Whereas Apple prores 422 is managed, indeed)

I think it is just an issue with ffmeg version cause when I use the last version of it in command line and I confirm even Apple prores 4444 is handled.

Those things said, it is really a great soft.
And when somme features just like forcing 24 ips even from a 25 ips video file are added, it will be perfect for almost common jobs.

Further:

I was just exploring all features included and I was just asking to myself how your sound level mangement exactly worked ? (you know: "I want to play back at this level but I have to use This other level")
I think there could be also improvement here cause, generally, soung management in movie theaters remains a big problem, for everyone.
If the world was pervect, all DCPs mixed sounds should be at level 7 (dolby level) and everybody would be happy... but we all know the world is not perfect... and sound level differences are nightmares for projection managers.

So I was dreaming about a possible feature in a future release of DVD O MATIC, that could allow automatic limitation sound level at for example -12db, -10db or -8bd, etc... It could actually do what we do when we look at the sound level in a sound editing software...
But I kwow: as my father used to tell me, I'm a dreamer and I should go back to work, right now !

Thank you again for your amazing job.

Thierry

I think the problem with prores 444 is a bug of DVD-o-matic not handling YUV444 video properly (0000066).

The "I want to play back at this level" stuff is described in the manual:

http://carlh.net/software/dvdomatic/manual/html/ch03s04.html

It's not really very developed, but it allows you to play a test DCP, adjust the volume to be correct in the screen, and then DVD-o-matic can re-make the DCP with adjusted audio gain. It only works with the Dolby CP750 at the moment, though (it needs to know the gain curve of the volume control. I'm not sure if this is standardised).

As regards audio level management, I think it's a tricky area. It could normalise, but that often doesn't have much to do with perceived level... I will think about it. I don't think an analytical method can easily substitute for listening, but maybe we can get close.

Hi, it would be interesting to hear if prores 444 works any better with DVD-o-matic version 0.74. Thanks!

Hi Carl.
I've just seen your last released.
SOrry but I tried it on ubuntu 12.04 lts.
It works good with prores 422 but it crashes with prores 4444
it says "could not set content" and then it crashes.

I try to download windows version and I test it. I will report the results here.

Hi.
So, I've just dowloaded the windows 64 bits version and the same thing happens.
It crashes with a Apple prores 4444 .mov file. It perfectly works with 422 and other basic stuff, sure.

but keep beeing lion hearted ! Even VLC doesn't manage to read this file !

Only the last version of ffmpeg in command line gives a perfect tiff files folder when I ask it to do.

OK, thanks very much for testing. I think I've fixed that now. Will put a new version up if and when it passes its regression tests.

Perhaps you could try version 0.75. It works ok here with a short Prores 4444 file from the internet.

Hi Carl.
Great. It works with the same file that did not work in the last test.
you may proudly tell to entire world that "DVD O MATIC works with APPLE Prores 4444 files".
Congratulations.

and just another idea for enhancement I just had while I was testing this file.
when I was using cursor to see a preview of the video, i was telling to myself it could be great to see exactly the number of the picture you are watching. And why not, beside of the "Play" button, there could be "next picture" & "last picture" buttons. It could be great when you have to build several DCP from different moments of a same video file.. Knowing the number of the frame you are watching would let you easily report right values on the trim frame (end and start) selection.

OK, great, I've opened another feature request for this. Thanks!
